Saudi Arabia Expands USB-C Mandate to Laptops in Phase 2

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) have announced the implementation of the second phase of the unified charging port regulation. As of April 1, 2026, USB Type-C is now the mandatory charging standard for all laptops sold in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Sustainability Through Standardization

Following the successful first phase (which covered smartphones, tablets, and digital cameras), this expansion to laptops is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 commitment to environmental sustainability and electronic waste reduction. The mandate ensures that users can use a single charger for a wider range of devices, simplifying the consumer experience.

Compliance Requirements:

  • Mandatory USB-C: All new laptops entering the KSA market must feature a functional USB Type-C charging port.
  • Saber Integration: Manufacturers must upload updated Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and technical files to the Saber platform reflecting compliance with the new standard.
  • Enforcement: Non-compliant hardware will be restricted from import and sale across all retail channels in the Kingdom.

HertzWeg Insight:

"KSA is one of the first major markets in the Middle East to mirror the EU's common charger directive for laptops. Manufacturers with global product lines should ensure their 2026 KSA batches are updated to the USB-C standard to maintain their market share in this high-growth region."
